Technology and Animation Offer Tricks to Fun Learning
My students need access to creative ways of retaining information prevalent to our world. The use of animated software can allow students a visual connection to important subjects.
I am a current second grade teacher in a city school district with students that have goals in academics, however have limited resources in grasping them. Families in our community typically struggle to make ends meet. Seventy-nine percent of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch plans daily, which is configured based on income.
In the past years, I have worked with many students coming from environments of lower socio-economic status which is often due to limited prior knowledge and accessibility to resources.
These students struggle with learning the way other students in the classroom may learn. Visual and hands on materials can assist in academic improvement. The use of videos can also encourage the building of vocabulary and about topics they have limited knowledge about due to not having opportunities to experience them.
Along with students of a lower socio-economic environments, I also work regularly with students of increased academic needs. These students can be on specialized plans that are set to meet their academic needs (IEP's) These students usually require special needs and with that, many times the information taught in the classroom needs to be introduced differently. Videos, animation, and music can encourage their learning.
My Project
When this project is fully funded, I will be able to offer students access to animated videos portraying an extremely large assortment of important literature. The Brain Pop subscription offers learning through prevalent subjects in categories such as Social Studies, English, Math, Arts/Music, Health, and the Advancements in Engineering/Technology. The use of Flocabulary offers catchy songs with visual animations to get similar information across to students. This too is through a yearly subscription for the classroom. In the past, I have used free trials and my students have loved the songs and often would sing the catchy phrases throughout the day. Unfortunately I can not use any more trials. On FIocabulary, I especially enjoy their math fact songs as well as grammar songs to aide in remembering the tricks for writing.
By using these subscription sites, students are actively immersed in learning with the integration of fun and amusement along the way.
Students can apply their gained knowledge in games as well as comprehension quizzes, which apply incentives for correct answers identified. The use of catchy songs, along with the animation, can assist in the visual and auditory connection most students need to gain new information.
