"Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought, or an event." - Heidi-Hayes Jacobs. My goal as an educator in an age of digital natives is to provide my students the opportunity to access technology across the curriculum.
My school is part of one of the largest school districts in Southern California, and is one which does not receive additional funding such as Title I funds.
We barely have enough funds to purchase basic supplies, let alone costly technology purchases. Any technology on site has been generously provided by parents, teachers and supporters in the community. My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Some students have daily access to media at home, while others have never had the opportunity to even touch an iPad. Within the next three years, all these students will be expected to navigate technology with ease, regardless of their background.
My Project
I currently have two iPads available to my students and would be very grateful to be able to increase this amount to six. Four new iPads with protective cases would enable me to work with my students in small groups practicing targeted skills such as keyboarding and would also allow my students to access the technology independently while I work with other small groups.
Aligned with Kindergarten Common Core State Standard in Writing, students, "with guidance and support from adults, [will] explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers." My students will be assigned to complete oral presentation assignments, import images from these assignments, and publish a document that will be printed and compiled into a book. They will be learning to use a drawing program, keyboarding skills, and how to save documents for future use. Additionally, I would use these iPads to conduct our online assessments and access a variety of videos and learning boards through Discovery Learning.
"Technology is just a tool.
In terms of getting kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important." -Bill Gates
Small group instruction is the key to getting children comfortable with and fired up about technology. Bringing four more iPads with protective cases into my classroom will allow me to work with small groups and give my students the increased access to technology they deserve and need.
