Help me give my students an invention kit, drawing tablets, and a color printer, so they can gain 21st century skills through powerful hands-on experiences with technology during every step of the creative process.
Our high school is in rural Missouri with approximately 245 students, grades 9-12. Over 50% of our kids qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite school and family resources sometimes being limited, our students are passionate about their learning, and kids are excited about new classes and extracurricular activities we offer.
My art students are very creative and eager to learn, and they love using technology every day.
Although they vary in level of ability and learning styles, they will all benefit from access to technology they can use to explore and make art. For my students, I believe that combining the power of technology and art is an avenue to success. In order to compete in today’s society, students need to be familiar with the tools of technology. Teaching in a small community, I am concerned my students will not receive the same advantages as students in larger districts. Many of my students don’t have access to technology outside of school, so I work to give them as many valuable experiences with technology as possible. They are amazing students who deserve exposure to technology that will help them build skills they will use in their future education and careers.
My Project
Art and technology are becoming increasingly intertwined every day as new tools and products are created. I want to expand technological resources in my classroom and bring the most exciting and up-to-date experiences to my students. Technological devices, including a printer, invention kit, and digital drawing tablets will allow my students to explore many new hands-on projects that integrate technology and art. These devices can be used effectively in every stage of the learning process, from introduction of concepts to student completion of work.
There is a wide variety of activities that can be made possible in the classroom with the use of technological products, which will provide more invigorating ways for my students to engage in the art-making process.
For example, the color printer with scanner will allow my students to print finished digital artworks for display and incorporate their own imagery into their artwork. The Makey Makey invention kit will provide unique ways to create interactive artworks that use coding, which is a great 21st century skill. Drawing tablets help produce images digitally, but they also assist in traditional art-making by quickly making revisions to find the best composition. These tools will also be useful for design challenges and animation, in addition to other tasks that enhance daily learning.
Student projects will consist of visual art combined with other subjects such as math and science, and they will help students learn about broader issues such as cultural identity, environmental issues, and other themes. These technology devices will be used in conjunction with other equipment acquired through grants at our school, including a 3-D printer and plasma cutter. They will be used each year for projects in every art class, so the donation will eventually reach an even greater number of students and have a broad impact over time.
