This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with some of the most enthusiastic students in the world. However, they are at risk of being left behind. I teach 8th grade Literacy within the New York City Public School System at a middle school where a large part of the student population is below the poverty level and over 80% receive free lunch.
My school has one computer lab for well over 1,000 students. Teachers must "book" classroom time to publish work or complete research in the computer lab. Time in the lab in not only coveted, but very brief--only a 40 minute block. Despite their strong efforts to effectively manage their time they often fall short. They do not have a tool to save all of their hard work. Due to the large student population, students are not permitted to save work to the desktop. The end result is that the students feel rushed and subsequently their work is compromised.
This year I am collaborating with the Social Studies teacher on my teaching team. The prospect of this makes us both extremely excited about projects that we have created specifically for this purpose. The students will publish work at a minimum of twice a month. With the flash drive students are not confined to working on school computers where they must print final copies before leaving. They can be thoughtful in their work and not feel restricted or they can work elsewhere like a public library. Not only will the students be able to use the flash drives for our classes, but they can use them next year when they go on to high school. For this reason, I am asking for 53 Kingston(R)DataTraveler USB 20 flash drives with 10GB.
It is no secret that when any type of technology is incorporated into a classroom it acts as an incentive. Students are more interested and look forward to completing an assignment. Moreover, by funding this proposal you are providing underprivileged students with a sense of empowerment, and ownership of something they otherwise would never have. It may be hard for you to believe, but these little technological gems can have an enormous impact on a new school year. Wouldn't be amazing for my new classes to arrive to school have such an amazing gift waiting for them? Thank you in advance for considering us!
