Technologically Challenged: Help Us Enter the 21st Century!
My students need a computer lab (laptops, printer, and headphones) so they can do projects for science, publish their writing pieces, and become computer literate.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a typical day, my students are expected to be ready for the 21st century but do not have the tools they need to do so. Some of my students have access to technology at home, but many do not. The Common Core State Standards require students to use technology as part of the learning process.
My students are a diverse group both ethnically and financially.
They enjoy technology. I bring my own laptop to my classroom and use it to do various things for them. They were amazed when I printed clip art to use when we made posters to advertise that we are collecting Box Tops at our school. Our school is relatively small. We have a limited number of English Learners, at least compared to schools I have worked at in the past. As a result, we do not receive as much funding as some other schools, and are therefore unable to fund the purchase of computers for a computer lab or even individual computers for the classroom. We are not one of the schools that received iPads.
I am fortunate to have a document reader in my classroom, but it is the only technology that I have access to, other than my own laptop, in the classroom.
My Project
The Common Core State Standards require students to use technology to do research, create and publish their writing, create visual presentations, and to communicate and work with others. They are expected to be computer literate in a way that we never were when we were growing up. I would like to set up the laptops like a mini computer lab in my classroom and allow students to use them at various times throughout the week. The computers can be used to assist learning in every subject. Students can play math games, take practice tests online, or research topics related to Science or Social Studies. Additionally, they can publish their writing. I would like to use the laptops to teach the students how to do things such as add pictures or clip art to their writing or research projects. A digital camera would allow my students to take pictures of observations they make in Science and add it to their Science observation notebook. They will have a better chance at becoming computer literate.
I understand the need to be computer literate in this day and age, but I am currently unable to help my students meet those standards.
Your donations will help us acquire the technology necessary to prepare my students for the future. In addition, my students will enjoy writing more if they can publish their piece on the computer and add pictures, some of my students who struggle with math may be able to improve through the use of math games, and research projects will be possible.
