Each day my students are challenged to use critical thinking skills and artistic process to create original works of art. A new challenge confronts students today: the challenge of learning to create with digital technology. To do this we need the proper tool: iPads in the art room.
My school serves around 700 students ranging from VPK-6th Grade.
They are curious creative young artists. Our school and students are located in a lower socioeconomic area. Many do not have access to computers, tablets, or other forms of technology in the home. Placing iPads in the hands of our students will give them the chance to learn technology as well as art skills that some may take for granted. Their excitement in learning will increase as we bring real world applications into their lives. With iPads available for each student the possibilities are endless.
My Project
Students will be using this iPad to learn how to create digitally. They will be making paintings and drawings just like they do with paper. However, the iPad will also open up new possibilities for my students. They will be able to create animation, sculpt, make educational videos and much more due to the iPad's multi-functionality. Students will also be able to publish their work online, curate their own online galleries on Artsonia.com and maintain and present online digital portfolios that will record their growth as artists and will be available to them forever.
Since many of our students do not have the opportunity or access to technological tools like iPads, having them available in the art room will benefit my students and improve my class in many ways.
Students need to know not just how to use technology but how to create with technology and use it to understand their world. This is imperative as they grow because technology application is an ever increasing part of their lives.
