Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have special needs and technology can help them! They have a wide range of disabilities including nonverbal autistic and auditory impaired. Paper and pencil tasks are difficult for them to complete. Mathematical concepts without hands on technology is hard for them to grasp.

I have 10 students with special needs.

Their classifications include ADHD, Autism, Hearing Impaired, Visually Impaired and Communication Impaired. It is hard for them to focus in class when there is just a simple lectured lesson. It is hard for them to communicate their needs when they have no verbal capabilities. They get frustrated when they don't understand a concept or can't complete a task on their own. I believe technology can assist them in many ways. It can focus their attention and assess their capabilities better. It will provide hands on learning to compliment my teaching. My school is in a low income town and many of these students do not have any form of technology at home. Their families are mostly Spanish speaking so help at home is limited.

My Project

My students need an iPad for technology and special needs. My students need a screen protector and durable case for the IPad so that it does not get damaged. I have attended many workshops and professional development meetings that have emphasized the use of iPads within the classroom. They particularly showed how to use certain apps with students classified with Autism. I have a list of apps that were recommended to use with my students. I plan on downloading these apps so that I can enhance my lessons. They can use hands on technology to show their thinking. They can play games to practice concepts. They can take assessments that more accurately show their capabilities. This form of technology can be used for all subject areas.

My students are not exposed to technology at home.

This will improve their technology skills. My students will be more focused and on task. It will help them practice skills and improve mastery. They will learn, but also have fun playing educational apps at the same time. It will help them to communicate better. Overall is will improve their knowledge and enhance their real word skills.
