Help me give my students the protective eyewear they can use on the daily, headphones to hear all the amazing sounds, and cleaning supplies to keep those nasty germs off our Chromebooks!
My class of twenty-two wonderful students and I live on the beautiful island of Maui. Waiheʻe Elementary is where we call home and we are also a Title I school. My students are on their way to becoming authors, painters, video game designers, police officers, scientists, and much more! They have a passion to learn, a fun-filled spirit and are learning to empathize and respect one another as amazing individuals. Although our year has just started, I know that they all will become important community members to our beautiful home of Hawaiʻi, or wherever their journey will take them!
My Project
This project is to re-supply some materials in our classroom, but most importantly give them a tool to protect their eyes from daily use of a computer. Now in today's day and age computers, ipads, phones and many other devices are used all the time. Our students use their chromebooks in my classroom for many different reasons. Completing lessons on iReady, creating collages or videos with Adobe Spark, researching topics that are interesting to them, and the big one dun.dun.dun.....STATE TESTING! Our kids are on their computers all the time, and the question for me is, "Am I giving them the proper tools to keep themselves healthy everyday on their Chromebooks?" You might be think where the heck is this description going, so let me turn on the light for you. The BLUE light that is! Now don't get me wrong, studies have shown that Blue light does have positive affects like boosting alertness and helping to regulate our carcadian rhythms. (PreventBlindness.org) However, we all know that too much of a good thing is not always good for us.
According to Harvard Health, "Blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long - and shifted circadian rhythms by twice as much".
This means that if students are using their tech during the day and then going home to more tech, they are messing up their sleep cycles. According to PreventBlindness.org, "Blue light from computer screens and digital devices can decrease contrast leading to digital eye strain - Studies suggest that that continued exposure to blue light over time could lead to damaged retinal cells." Our students live in a digital age and will be using technology for many years to come. This project will help give them on piece of protection to combat those side affects.
