My Students
I teach special education in Oakland Unified. I work at two high schools supporting students with a wide range of needs in all content areas. With distance learning, school has become that much for difficult for my students (and for me).
Zoom calls, Google Classroom, Pear Deck, FlipGrid, Desmos, etc., and schedules that change every quarter are but some of the things that my students need to navigate.
That said, learning new things and overcoming challenges is an opportunity for growth.
There is not a day that I do not feel lucky to have my job doing the work that I do! My students struggle to find their place as learners in school but I see them as creative, funny, and deeply empathetic young adults who are a testament to who they are and the bright future they deserve.
My Project
The use of technology has become even more important during distance learning. While trying to attend to long days in Zoom sessions the need to be able to block out distractions is a significant challenge. Trying to focus on responding to chat conversations in Zoom while also paying attention to the presentation and sometimes having to share their screen, students with attention issues and those lacking solid keyboarding skills often find the experience defeating.
The noise cancelling headphones and colored keyboard covers will allow students to both pay attention in class and more easily use the Chromebook keyboard.
We face issues of the teacher's connection stalling while working in classes as well as in 1:1 sessions on a daily basis. This proves particularly difficult for students with IEPs who are second language learners. We will also practice using tools that help with math as graphing and demonstrating math syntax with a keyboard is difficult.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are going to work or not. In this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their productivity as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
