Tech Time: A Technology Rich Classroom for 2nd Grade

My students need 1 iPod, 1 Nook, 1 Nook cover, 1 digital camera, 1 memory card, and 1 scanner to grow in a technology enriched environment.

My Students

"There can be infinite uses of new age technology, but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom & make it work, then it fails," said Nancy K. U.S. Senator. I am an innovative teacher who can make technology work in the classroom, please help me bring it in!

We live in a small rural area with a population of about 600.

My second grade students have a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. Some students have the ability to use technology at home and others have no access. I would like to give students an equal opportunity in our classroom. We started an on-line discussion in our classroom and so far this year my students have posted over 370 comments from school and home. We have also created our own research based power point presentations. My students are very excited about the ability to engage with technology.

My Project

The materials I have chosen will allow students to use them across the curriculum. The iPod player will be used to download audio books so students can be listening to stories aloud. This will help typical and struggling students with vocabulary, comprehension, & fluency. I have chosen a digital camera and memory card to allow students and myself to take pictures of classroom activities to post to our classroom website & put pictures in their digital presentations. I would like to have a classroom scanner to allow students to scan in their work and use it to model examples. Lastly, I have chosen 1 Nook and 1 Nook cover. This can be a great resource to the classroom to allow students to be motivated to read. It will also be able to have educational games downloaded to the device. The Nook has a voice feature that will allow struggling readers support on reading the text. These technology components will be a great asset to our classroom.

Researcher Jean Piaget, once said, "The principle goal of education is to create men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done." I am a firm believer of helping students grow & learn beyond the classroom.

I would like to provide them with real tools they will use in today's society. It is my job as an educator to prepare students for the future & help them become life long learners. Thanks for helping prepare the leaders of tomorrow.
