A truly hands-on music experience is essential for the children in my high poverty inner city school. The music room serves all children from kindergarten to grade 8, general music, choir, and instrumental music. It is an exciting and welcoming place.
Every day, students walk in singing "Walk right in, sit right down, baby let your hair hang down..." The first things they ask are, "Can we play instruments today?
Can we play music games?" Their excitement is obvious and we work in groups to share our instruments, computers, and electronic learning games.
The tablet is a new technology tool that lends itself to the instruction of beginning musicians. The goal is to provide the opportunity for each child in the elementary grades to explore the possibilities for music using technology tools. Music composition apps will reinforce music skills and creativity. Use of the built in camera will allow students to create picture and video documentation of their creative efforts.
Your help will make it possible for individuals and small groups of students to work individually and together to improve music skills, to become adept at using technology as a learning tool, and to document their learning.
Active participation makes it possible to realize the importance of music literacy. The skills of music literacy have been proven to enhance and improve the reading and math skills needed in basic literacy.
