Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We reside within the NYC public school system is District 75. District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and, oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.

My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.

For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.

I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club, and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.

My Project

Over the years, tens-of-thousands of dollars-worth of technology have been broken that can be repaired with the right parts. The problem is, having the in-house IT department within the city make the repairs would result in hundreds of dollars for each laptop, making them not even worth repairing. The city's internal online shopping options do not make these parts available, forcing broken laptops to be disposed of after they are out of warranty.

The crazy thing is: most of these laptops simply need a new charger, battery, a mouse to replace the damaged track pad and a re-imaged hard drive.

It will take many hours to repair each of these laptops. But, I have no doubt I can teach my students how to repair EVERY broken MacBook—essentially adding around 24 laptops (two functional carts of laptops) that would serve close to half the students at our school!

A single new MacBook at the prices offered by our internal partners would cost more than this entire project! I am estimating we can fix 24 laptops. But, the number might be significantly higher! With your help, my students will get to take on the responsibility of saving our school tech, and laptops that have been waiting to be disposed of will be back in the hands of students—where they belong!

Please help us make this incredible STEM project and game changer a reality! With your help, we can bring these MacBooks back to life! Thank you so much!
