My students need more laptops and Fire tablets in order to give each student a way to experience technology beyond sharing with a partner every week. Extremely large classes limit the individual computer usage I strive for.
As a K-8 Science Technology teacher I am able to get to know most of the kids in the school and experience first hand their desire to learn, and the sheer joy of experiencing something new.
Each of my classes are full of a variety of personalities and with that comes a variety of learners.
Some students learn best by watching something done and listening to how a task can be accomplished, while others learn through doing. Those students thrive when they're given a chance to explore a concept while listening to their favorite songs so that they can concentrate.
The students in my school come from multiple cities, some traveling even as far as 60 minutes to school every single day in order to get a good education. It is my mission to do everything I can to help them succeed.
My Project
As the Elementary and Middle School technology teacher for the school I have a large amount of students in each class. Due to the lack of resources and tech support I only have 17 working computers. This is a struggle due to the fact that my elementary classes have an average of 24 students in each class. Having more laptops would do wonders for giving students individual time on the computers and would help tremendously in getting them on their typing lessons.
While the lack of computers has ushered in a variety of collaborative projects, which I believe to be necessary and important, I want to have the option to give my students a way to explore technology individually too.
Right now, the lack of computers has caused all students in 6th grade to work with a partner every week. This has caused a hiccup in their typing practice that I try to emphasize with the older grades.
Adding to their exploration of technology I would like to add a few tablets to our classroom so that we can branch out into other types of projects; basic lessons on how to use a tablet, using apps, and maybe even video editing. Please help me to help my students to explore the endless world of technology that this generation values so much!
