Ms. Kate Latshaw from Chicago IL is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need an iPad and a few accessories for planning and presenting classroom lessons.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students attend a public neighborhood school on the south side of Chicago. I teach a wide demographic of young adults ranging from freshmen to juniors in high school. Next year, I will also be serving seniors. I have about 150 students divided up between English II: American Literature and AP Capstone Seminar and Research. My students are in desperate need of more resources and some individual feedback. Since this is a public school, they often fall victim to budget cuts, and they don't deserve to have their educational path rerouted as a result of poor funding; they deserve more. I want to supply these wonderful scholars with technology to further enhance their researching, writing, collaborating, and presentation skills. I truly believe that many of these students are bound to do amazing things that will change America in a meaningful, positive way.
These students are honestly the kindest, most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of teaching.
They are respectful individuals, and they will use your donations to improve their academic skills in preparation for higher education and beyond.
I am in desperate need of an iPad and some accessories in order to properly plan technology-advanced lessons and interactive activities for my students. I had a Samsung computer, and it lasted for 5 years of public school teaching; this year, it crashed, and I have been borrowing a student's computer for presenting class lessons. I really think that an iPad is the best option to make lesson plans that will meet my students' needs and interests.
My students and I can have digital discussions, white-board chalk talks, digital sharing, and regular feedback for essays and presentations.
I want my lessons to be as paperless as possible; having an iPad will allow me to engage with my students in a more efficient, timely, and eco-friendly manner.
I will use the iPad in the following ways:
- My AP Capstone students regularly submit research proposals and practice exams that require immediate feedback. At the moment, the only time I can give feedback is by using the school's desktop computer or the laptop that I borrow from the student. With an iPad, I will be able to give immediate feedback on google docs that will show my students where they can improve their essays. I also plan on projecting their essays to the board and using the stylus to make edits as a class for students to get real-time feedback.
- I have created a website where students can engage in online discussion; with the iPad, I can monitor their discussion from home and move around the classroom to show students their opinions and how they pertain to the discussion prompt/topic.
- The keyboard will allow me to create power-points/google-slides that can teach new grammatical skills, writing prompts, and model writing skills for English Language Arts improvement.
