Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public middle school at the heart of Corpus Christi. It is one of the oldest standing middle schools in the city. I've always taken great pride working at this school because it is often associated with wonderful memories created by friends and family that attended the school as an adolescent.
My pride does not stop with the school but extends out to my students.
I often refer to my students as my children because they mean that much to me. We have flipped the classroom dynamic to center around the theme of cooperative learning while still helping multiple learning styles. Technology, online simulations, hands-on activities, music lessons, and so much more can be found in my science class.
My students have adapted the cooperative learning environment and thrive off of helping one another to understand a topic. As much as they love helping one another they love competing even more. Although the only prize they get is a small piece of candy, I've noticed that the pride they get from answering a question correctly far outweighs the small treat they receive.
My Project
Technology and science go hand in hand! My science class is very interactive and technology is always added for full engagement. From using QR codes to take notes, applications to assist students who are challenged with reading, accommodating students with visual impairments, and even my English language learners use technology so that they are able to easily translate texts. Technology isn't always utilized the way it was intended but my goal is to show them just that! Showing students all of the possibilities that these devices have could benefit them so much. My students are great with technology but often are limited due to the lack of resources. About 40% of my students have an electronic device and of those only 30% have access to the internet through these devices. My goal is to provide easy access to technology to everyone in my class. Technology literacy is a key component of my classroom!
