Tech Savvy Kindergarteners

My Students

My students are seeking the available, yet limited technology in the classroom to complete curriculum specific lessons. I would like for all of my students to be able to code and read fluently at the end of kindergarten. "We need to prepare our students for the future, not our past." - Ian Jukes

I have kindergarteners that have little to no exposure to technology outside of the classroom.

Some of them are coming from homes which can only afford the basics, not technology. When the students come into my classroom they are excited to learn using a variety of tools, including computers, radios, document camera, and SmartBoard. My school has over 50 percent of students receiving free and reduced lunch. When looking at my class list, at least 15 of the 18 are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

My students will use the tablets to work on coding programs such as www.scratch.mit.edu. This will allow them to code different characters to make them move and do things. By utilizing this program, the students will gain a better understanding when coding robots during our robotics lesson. The students will also be working in educational apps to help with recognizing letters, letter sounds, sight words, and reading easy books.

The donations will benefit my students by allowing them to work in pairs or small groups for coding in the www.scratch.mit.edu program.

The tablets would also allow me to have students work on a specific skill that needs additional strengthening on their own. The students will be able to take the tablet to a particular area within the room to work on those weaker skills.
