Students at our school are resilient. They come from varied walks of life with just as varied experiences. A large percentage of our students are classified with a disability, be it academic, behavioral, or other health-impairment. This at-risk population is often marginalized, many of them coming to us and experiencing accomplishments, success, comfort, and support for the first time in an academic setting.
Many of our students have faced childhood trauma of varying degrees, but are still present and constantly working to better themselves, their circumstances, and plans for the future.
We strive to provide safe, positive, and therapeutic learning environments while empowering them to take pride in their academic growth. Our mission is to provide them with the tools, skills, and confidence to make positive changes for their social, emotional, and academic success.
My Project
We work in a Special Act School in New York State. For those of who don't know, Special Act Schools are public schools that serve students in residential care. (In the midst of this pandemic, we have continued in-person instruction while following CDC's health and safety guidelines). These schools serve New York State's most at-risk student population. This district functions as a 6:1:1, meaning for every six students, there is one teacher and one teaching assistant. In that 6:1:1, our district teaches students grades 7-12, often resulting classes from multiple grade-levels or joint courses. Our students do not have individual devices while in our care and have limited access to technology throughout the day.
"If we teach today's students as we taught yesterday's, we rob them of tomorrow" -Dewey.
Due to these technological constraints, our students are unable to access digital learning resources and experiences on a regular basis. This project will provide us with the opportunity for students to enhance their learning and understanding using a wide-variety of applications and programs. This also will allow us to enrich differentiated learning experiences.
As math teachers, myself and Ms. Gifford, are constantly looking for ways to incorporate technology into everyday instruction in a relevant and meaningful manner. Our district has allowed us to develop STEM electives that unfortunately had a limited technology component. This project will enable us to not only enrich everyday instruction for every one of our students, but it would provide us the opportunity for growth in our STEM electives. This project will fund both myself and Ms. Gifford's classes with 10 tablets/room, protective cases, and charging stations.
