Tears Of A Tiger (Or My Students Struggling To Find Books)
My students need a total of 20 copies of 6 different books by Sharon Draper, the #1 requested author in my classroom.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"This was the first book I ever read. Do you have any more like it?"
Damion, who struggles to focus and who has very low reading scores, told me that yesterday. He found the book, "Battle of Jericho" that had been donated to my classroom.
Another student overheard him. If Damion liked that book, he might like it too. It did not take long before there was a waiting list for this book and another one by Sharon Draper "Tears of a Tiger."
As a 9th and 10th grade English teacher, I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and state test next year. Right now, students are an average of three years behind in their reading levels. Without improving their reading level, they will not pass.
Studies have proved that the best way to improve student reading levels is to READ. Simple enough, right? So my students spend class time every day reading. In the second month of school, their attention has begun to wane. Most students have finished their first book, and cannot find another one to interest them. They are very motivated and committed, but need books that will keep them interested.
I am asking for more books by Sharon Draper. She is an excellent author and her books connect with my students like no others. These books offer a chance for students to connect with a world outside their own, and more importantly - the chance that they realize teenage boys all over feel just as they do. My "Free-Write Fridays" reveals every week another student who just wants to know he is normal. Just like all of us, they just want to be heard.
Please, please, please give my students a chance at educational and lifelong success. Don't give up on this chance to open up the world of literature in "Battle of Jericho" and "Tears of a Tiger" and open a new world of opportunities!
