This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 34 self-contained high school students.

We reside in a Title I school, which means there is very little funding, yet we have such a high need for supplies!

My students are all amazing, unique, loving and energetic humans! They are vibrant and brave, active and creative. My students have a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, ED, Down Syndrome, LD, and multiple disabilities. I have verbal students as well as nonverbal students. All of my students have difficulty with communication skills, social skills, and struggle to process sensory information.

Our class is bare and supplies are minimal. My students deserve the best, and at the very least deserve the items deemed necessary to help them self-regulate, de-stress and provide imperative sensory stimulation.

My Project

Board games teach kids of all ages about teamwork, patience, and focus. Board games can actually benefit kids' brains and language development.

Board games offer opportunities for early learning, boost language skills, sharpen student focus, teach the value of teamwork, help students gain social skills and can help soothe anxiety.

Games help young players identify colors, count spaces, and develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity in moving cards and pieces around the board. Learning to wait your turn and follow the rules are also important lessons that our students need to learn.

Board games are an easy way to encourage healthy brain development in older kids and teens. Strategy games help executive function skills, which include planning, organizing, and making good decisions. Games where players have to remember several pieces of information at once (who did what, and where) might help a child who’s having trouble with reading comprehension — all while still having fun. Board games, when played without interruptions, can help lengthen a child's attention span.
