My Students
What I love about my students is the amount of enthusiasm and energy they bring each and everyday to basketball practice. I am a Physical Education teacher and basketball coach at my elementary school. Our school has 900+ students, all coming from different backgrounds. I have a co-ed diverse basketball team of 20 students from the 4th and 5th grade. The team is made up of English Language Learners, students with special education services, students from low-income households, and students who just came to the country recently.With the basketball team my students are able to have a boost of confidence within themselves, become school leaders, and set great examples for all the students in the school. This opportunity has changed their lives for the better, and gave them a name.
You can best teach character on the playing field, using sports to teach life lessons.
My players are learning the value of teamwork, being a team player, and accountability. My team is learning it’s not only about them, but it’s about the whole team and how we are able to go through certain obstacles with each other. With this team the players have developed a family that’s unforgettable.
My Project
Uniforms for our elementary basketball team will give the students a sense of confidence, unity, and a place of belonging. Some of our students just want to find a home to fit in. For most of our students, the team is the only family they have. Being able to provide players with uniforms will give them a reality check that they’re actually part of a basketball organization with great responsibilities. What we wear at times provides us confidence in who we are. For some of our players it is their dream to walk down the school hallways with a Tiger’s basketball jersey on their back, and be respected by their peers and staff. For some of our players that felt invisible to others will now feel acknowledged by everybody. We are ready to kick off our season with confidence and integrity, but will need uniforms to make this possible. With the assistance of donors choose and Dick Sporting Good, I hope our teamwork can make the dreamwork for our youth. I appreciate your time.
