Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our School has not had a student council for many years. This year, we brought the council back to give the students an opportunity to take on leadership roles, organize events and promote school unity and spirit.
My student council students have excelled at the task so far.
They have successfully re-installed Friday morning spirit day assemblies, they have started a morning broadcast where two students give weekly announcements, they organized a school wide mock election for US president as well as for the board for Student Council and now they are holding a school wide community service were the entire school is encouraged to donate travel size hygiene products. They will make hygiene packages and donate to the Los Angeles Mission. All of this has been done in a matter of a couple of months.
At our last meeting, they started to plan activities for the second semester of school.
One of their future school wide activities is to organize a few games, teachers/staff vs students. They want to show students that playing a sport isn't only be fun, but healthy as well.
My students will host workshops with the students to teach them the rules and correct way to play soccer, softball and basketball. They will then form student teams and challenge the teachers/staff to do the same. They will then host a school wide viewing event to watch the matches between students and teachers/staff.
We are asking for support in getting shirts in three different colors. A different color for each sport. We also need transfers with a positive message to transfer onto the shirts. The students will promote mental health with a positive message while also promoting physical health through sports. Giving them a uniform will give them the sense of being a real team.
