My students need volleyball, softball, and baseball equipment for their team sports endeavors. Most students play two or more sports each year and love the sportsmanship.
"Set your goals high and don't stop until you get there." - Bo Jackson, baseball and football player.
This quote embodies the attitudes of our students in team sports and academics. Our students continually strive to improve in the classroom and on the field or court!
I teach at a small, rural, Title I school.
My students range in age from nine to fourteen. Many struggle with difficult circumstances, yet they maintain positive attitudes and are eager to learn. The poverty rate in the county in 2013 was 24.1%. The official U.S. poverty rate in 2013 for our state was 16.4% (U.S. Census Bureau). All of our students receive free lunch. I am amazed at the obstacles the students overcome on a daily basis. Their positive outlook and hope for the future inspires me to continually improvise and improve on my teaching strategies. The students enjoy school and our interactive learning environment. We integrate subjects as much as possible so that the students are able to make real connections and see how today will impact them tomorrow.
My Project
With the requested resources, more students in our school will be able to participate in volleyball, softball and baseball. Most of our middle school students who play sports, play every sport! The batting trainers and bats will provide more skills building time for the baseball and softball players. The gloves will be made available to the students who have difficulty purchasing one of their own. The volleyball net will allow the players to practice outside. The soft volleyballs will allow the beginners to become comfortable with the fundamentals of the game. The expo markers and clipboards will help to track progress, diagram plays, etc. All of the materials will help to enhance the performance of the players.
This project is important because team sports enhance a child's overall well being.
Children who play sports are healthier; team sports teach collaboration, sportsmanship, dedication, and persistence. As a classroom teacher I encourage my students to play sports, not only for the physical challenges but also for the academic challenges. In order to be eligible to play team sports, students must make the grades in the classroom. Team sports provide a win-win situation for all!
