This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While the suburban students are learning money-consuming sports like tennis, dance, acrobatics, hockey, skating, skiing etc. or going on vacations in their spare time, the inner-city children are staying at home and playing on their phones. Some students shared with me that they easily spend 8 hours on their phone on an average every day. I am very shocked when students show me their screen time on their phone and feel sad that how much valuable time in their life was wasted. But I also understand that these children, their families probably are not able to afford an extra-curricular sport or vacations, the phone might be their major entertainment and social support.

Badminton and table tennis are less expensive and easy to learn sports.

Students and families don't need to invest a lot of money to enjoy the fun of badminton and table tennis.

I am playing badminton and table tennis myself and I can feel how these sports make me happy and helped me to put my phone away and get more active and more healthy, both physically, emotionally and mentally.

I would like my students to experience this as well and hopefully, they can find the fun from the game, develop a healthy hobby and make new friends in their real life. I also hope these sports will help students get rid of phone addiction, and as a result, they are able to focus more on their school work.
