My Students
We are a unique, public, charter school in a rural fishing town. We are an environmentally themed school, so two to three times per week every student (Kindergarten - 8th grade) comes to Environmental Education (EE) class where we learn about a myriad of ecosystems, organisms, and issues facing our environment. EE class is completely project-based (no lecturing) and outdoors as much as possible. We try to expose the students to as many new experiences and activities as possible because we know that each student excels in their own unique way. We are committed to helping each student find their strengths especially when that strength is not classic classroom learning.
My students are a mix of awesome kids from the local town and students from the Charleston and Georgetown areas who opt out of their public institutions.
They are inquisitive, energetic, and eager to learn about and try new things. The one problem that we face is that because we are a state (and not locally) funded school, we do not receive the same amount of tax dollars. As teachers we have to find ways to fund all or the programs we want to do with our students.
My Project
We are going to a team building experience with our middle schoolers. 6th and 7th graders will go to James Island County Park and 8th grade will go white water rafting in Tennessee. Students worked hard to raise money but we have a small bit left to cover. Help us out.
Our last project was not funded (boat building) I'm hoping with our fundraising this will be a more affordable option.
Middle schoolers need to work on their communication more than any other group of people. This will help them learn how each of them has special skills they can bring to a challenge.
