Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When my students walk in through my classroom door they are motivated and ready to learn. They arrive with positive attitudes ready to ask for help in order to meet the rigorous expectations outlined in my class. Since most of these students come from low neighborhoods they cannot always purchase materials for projects to be completed in class. I try to purchase what I can or ask for donations in order to make their experience in class more positive and their success more likely. My students are grateful and show their appreciation with the effort they put forth. Some students have faced homelessness, unexpected disasters, and personal family problems. However, this does not seem to hamper their success. They are tenacious and driven to succeed. It is because of this attitude that I feel I cannot let them down. Although I teach Social Studies I also strive to teach my students empathy and success through collaboration. In exchange they have proven that they are willing to motivate and assist each other to succeed.
My Project
These basic materials will allow my students to complete team projects in class. These projects are ongoing. Students work in teams to build vocabulary as well as research and critical thinking skills. As we move through the school year students will research several history topics. I will provide short readings in which students will investigate and elaborate on the information provided. They will then use the Microsoft Surface Go to conduct research on the given topic. Research will be written on the Tablet where they will be able to adapt their findings according to the guided questions I present to the team. These research projects allow students to take control of their learning as I facilitate and guide them through each topic. The goal is to allow students to gain the ability to critically think while depending on each other to complete the tasks at hand. This type of team work and research will prepare students to better comprehend reading materials and identify bias in history and current documents; preparing them to become effective citizens after high school
