I need funding to attend a 3 day Reading Toolkit Institute hosted by Teachers College in New York to enhance my knowledge and skills to support my students’ reading growth.
My classroom community is made up of a diverse group of first-grade students who vary in ethnicity, home language, socioeconomic status, and learning style. As a teacher, I am committed to creating an equitable learning environment in which all children can grow, academically and socially. In addition to our rigorous curriculum, we also support our students' learning through project-based learning. These projects help us demonstrate our learning in ways that are meaningful to us. Students are given the opportunity to direct their own learning and are empowered to express their understanding in their unique way.
My Project
I currently use the Teacher's College reading, writing, and phonics curricula. Attendance at this professional development will further enhance my knowledge and skill base to push my readers further along the continuum of development.
My goal is to deepen my content knowledge in order to improve my teaching practice and best support, my students.
This training will help me integrate reading toolkits into my instruction. I will gain greater familiarity with the tools available in the Units of Study and learn how to adapt them to meet the needs of my students. This will support my small group work and conferences as I study student work, create tools, and utilize these tools. I look forward to students using these scaffolds and also building independence as they grow as readers.
I plan to attend this professional development with my team. This will to allow us to collaborate, align our teaching practice, and support each other as lifelong learners.
