My Project
My current first graders are an energetic bunch. They have worked very hard this year and they continue to excel in small groups or with hand on activities. This has been met in my classroom with many math manipulatives and games as well as lots of laminated write on, matching, and clip activities for literacy. When I taught second grade, I had acquired math and literacy Versatile kits that my students were able to use for similar standards based independent practice. It is my hope through this project to bring this wonderful resource to my current first graders.
Versatiles are tools from Hands2Mind that provide a wonderful way to practice that is challenging and fun.
Instead of logging on to a computer or turning on a digital device, children use a colorful workbook and a set of 12 plastic tiles. They arrange their tiles inside of a tray to correspond with their answer choices for the activity. When they finish the activity, they self-check by flipping over the tray. If the design the tiles create matches the design on the bottom of the activity sheet, they are correct and can choose a new activity. This work provides an interactive experience at their level, practicing classroom standards through a fun and independent vehicle.
