My students enjoy books. They look forward to the new books I add to the class library each week and their favorite day is always book shopping day. This is when they fill their personal book bins with materials to read for the upcoming week. I've used bonus points and so many other low cost ways to buy fanciful and enticing fiction books at their levels, and this year I finally bought enough flexible seating so that everyone has his/her own seat to read in wherever brings them the most peace and joy. The one piece that has not been addressed well in my room is my nonfiction collection. What my super second graders need is really great quality texts for them to add to their book bins and explore with partners about our science topics. Our town has a great science curriculum with enjoyable explorations for the kids, but the children don't retain a lot about the topics because the study is done in isolation. Having them immersed in the studies of engineering, matter, seed dispersal, ecosystems, or animal adaptations, will use their joy of reading to help them move beyond the fun activities and into an understanding of and love for science. It is my hope to have reading time simultaneously be science time and that when we do our hands on explorations, the children can share out all of the wonderful facts they have been collecting as science detectives when we read independently each day.
