We serve more than 700 students. A predominant percentage of our students come from low – mid-income families as 60% of the student population is on free/reduced lunch. We are a Title I Focus School, demonstrating a relatively high level of disengagement among our students. Roughly 5% of our students are absent at least once per week and 11% of our students have failed 2 or more classes.
Many of the families we serve rely on what the public education system can offer their children for any and all enrichment opportunities.
Our scholars have limited access to technology and hands-on manipulatives that can enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This project will help support our quest to improve student engagement and give them access to the technology that will prepare them for the future.
My Project
Teaching in a large urban district comes with its unique challenges. Our scholars have limited access to technology and the resources that will help them be successful in the 21st Century.
Technology offers an avenue for increased personalization of assignments as well as making content and skills more relevant and interesting for each and every child we serve.
Increasing technology will make differentiation attainable and content more available.
The Google Apps that are available with Chromebooks allow students to access their educational potential. Apps such as Google docs offer use the 'speech to text' function in order to get thoughts from their heads down on "paper," without having to worry about spelling and/or reading levels. The Google apps also allow for real-time collaboration and access to work anytime, anywhere as long as there is an internet connection. These features help prepare our students for the future.
