My students need the opportunity to level the playing field by using iPad technology to discover and consume information in a way that enhances their learning.
My students are third graders who come to class every day ready to learn and do their best. Students in my classroom come from diverse cultural, linguistic, racial, ethnic, ability, socioeconomic, gender, religious, immigration and family backgrounds. While my students come from loving homes, many are not exposed to technology. They crave the opportunity to learn through the various resources their peers use.
My students deserve the opportunity to not only learn to use technology, but to use technology to enrich their learning experiences.
My Project
Each day I teach my students literacy, math, social studies and science in both Spanish and English. My students have extremely varied learning needs. For example, some are learning their consonant sounds and others are reading middle school level books, and some are working to add 1 to a number while others are multiplying two-digit numbers. I focus on as much small group instruction as possible to maximize my students' individualized learning. As a teacher, I am looking to integrate technology into the curriculum. I am requesting iPads with protectors and covers so my students can use them when working on their own to continue to practice the skills they learn with me.
As my students today are our leaders of tomorrow, it is important for them to be exposed to digital literacy to prepare them to be successful in their twenty-first century educational and work environments.
With a variety of applications on the iPads, my students will be able to experience different ways of learning. Some of the ways my students may use the iPads include: acquiring vocabulary by listening to and reading along to a book or song; practicing reading fluency by recording themselves speaking; using the internet to learn how to research projects; presenting their writing pieces in creative and interactive ways; experiencing social topics through watching videos of experts speaking; and strengthening their understanding of a new math skill through fun and interactive games.
My students and I look forward to the chance for them to use iPads to reinforce the topics and concepts they learn with me and prepare them for their digital future.
