Do you remember the first time you picked up a bat and ball and fell in love with the game of baseball? How about the time you served a volleyball for the very first time? Many of you might be nodding your head with a smile on your face as you think back to your elementary school PE classes; however, there are some of you who didn't quite have that experience. As an elementary PE teacher, I have opportunity to help my students fall in love with physical activity just like I did when I was a little girl. I serve students of various abilities from many different walks of life.
Of the 13 elementary schools in our district, my school has the highest percentage of students living in poverty.
Unfortunately, this often means that most of them are not provided with the option to participate in extracurricular sports or activities due to the added expense. This is a fact that breaks my heart. Each person, in my opinion, should have the chance to fall in love with being active. This is where you come in!
My Project
Across the country, PE teachers are striving to revolutionize what we do and who people perceive us to be. Our mission is to create physically literate individuals, but how can we expect to do that with inadequate resources?
I serve a very unique population of students, so they deserve to have unique experiences when they visit my gym.
This means straying from the typical basketball and soccer units with paper/pencil assessments. Though there is nothing wrong with those units and assessments, not all of my students will flourish the way they deserve to.
By funding my project, you will make a difference in the lives of my 150 students. You will help visual learners to see what a curl-up should actually look like. You will help my critical thinkers analyze videos and GIFs so that they can dissect a skill. You will help make assessments more interactive and provide my students with a chance to self-assess their performance each day. You will help my non-athletes dance along with Sid the Sloth or work-out with an Avengers themed video, and you will help me be the best teacher I can be. PE should be a time where everyone is able to have fun and be excited to learn. This projector and screen would go a long way in helping to make this possible for my students.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about what I do and for considering me and my students.
