My students are energetic, fun-loving, and excited to come to school. Each of my students is a learner with special needs. They excel with projects that are hands-on and relate to real-life. They look forward to school each day because it has become a place where they can express themselves, learn something new, and make friends with the accommodations that help them be successful. Most of my students participate in the free/reduced lunch program and receive weekly occupational or speech therapies.
My students learn best with information provided to them in all different ways.
Hands-on activities, lessons turned into music, information presented in books and short clips---the possibilities are endless! Our classroom is an environment where they can flourish as learners with special needs. We strive to provide them with a space where they feel comfortable, safe, and capable of anything they put their mind to.
My Project
It is crucial to introduce technology as a learning medium to students with special needs. Technology is all around us, and being able to navigate around different types of technology such as computers, tablets and phones can help our students be successful after their school years. Introducing tablets to our classroom can help us with browsing the internet to find needed information, playing with educational apps and reading books that come to life online.
Technology is an extreme motivator for my students.
They become engrossed in lessons that involve some form of technology such as music videos, animated story books, short clips and more. This helps them comprehend the information being presented to them in a different way.
They will be able to access the "Free Time" section of the Fire 7 tablets to gain access to educational apps and videos when they have completed their work. We used to have access to iPads in our classroom, but, unfortunately, they are no longer able to be updated. We were able to do so many things on our iPad tablets!
In addition to all the great projects we can complete with these tablets during lessons, we can bring our coffee shop project to life! We can use the tablets to help us read orders and send invoices to the teachers who purchase our coffee. We can also use them when we go on trips to the community to document our experiences by taking pictures and videos. In order to help them become independent after school, my students will need practice with technology like tablets. We will be able to explore all they have to offer!
