"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow" - John Dewey.
In today's world it is vital that children learn technology skills as they evolve- even in 1st grade! However, technology is changing faster than schools are able to keep up with and that is where you come in!
I teach a 1st grade class of 24 awesome children in a low-income, high-need school.
My class is made up of a diverse group of children ready to learn. My class has a wide range of academic skills: from children with little background knowledge due to limited experiences to gifted and talented students who are working 1-2 grades above level! I have children that come to school without any school supplies or lunch money; 67% of my school is on the free or reduced lunch program.
My Project
I am requesting two Samsung Galaxy 7" tablets. These tablets are the perfect size for my students' little hands while still offering the necessary features of a full size tablet!
With these tablets my students will be able to practice reading, phonics, vocabulary, sight words, math facts, and many other skills using game-based apps. Students will also be able to use the Internet to research! Yes, research is now an important standard and the tablet will help immensely! The tablets can also be used to create stories - written ones and visual ones! the possibilities are endless! Add in the mobility factor and these tools can be used for almost any aspect of learning.
Many of my students do not have access to a computer or even Internet at home.
In order to teach 21st century skills, students need daily access to technology and their school is one place that technology should not be limited!
