My Students

I teach fourth grade to special education students in Delaware. My students are energetic, inquisitive and eager to learn. Many of my students require learning accommodations and modifications to the curriculum. To keep my students engaged and motivated to learn, I consistently use hands-on activities, visual aids and graphic organizers.

My students love to listen to me read books and look forward to hearing new stories to discuss and learn from.

My goal is to build a classroom community where my students learn valuable academic skills, while simultaneously learning how to work well with one another.

My Project

I would like to purchase several pieces of quality literature by Patricia Polacco to use as mentor texts in my special education classroom.

Patricia Polacco's books are multicultural and often have characters facing learning and social challenges, just as my students do.

A mentor text is any piece of writing that can be used to teach someone a reading and/or writing skill. With this grant, I quality literature will be purchased to read with my students. The texts will be used to inspire them to create and write original ideas based on the text as well as teach them specific reading skills. I have done research and determined which texts I would purchase. I would incorporate each resource as needed to teach a particular skill. In addition, the text would be available for students to look at and read on their own.

I will be using the mentor texts to teach several different writing and reading skills including theme, inference, point of view, connections, character traits, summary, context clues, compare and contrast, personal narrative and opinion writing. The books will help me teach several Common Core State Standards in literacy.
