Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade dual language English and Spanish 50/50 in a school that is located in one of the most densely populated, poverty-stricken areas of Los Angeles. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Almost all my students are English Learners and receive free meals. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households with very few resources.

My students are creative, energetic, and smart.

Despite the many obstacles they face, their love of learning never diminishes. I have very little control over what happens outside my classroom, but inside I can provide a learning environment where they can grow to their full potential.

My Project

Math counting collections are structured activities that allow children to explore and count different sets of objects, document that set, and tell how many they have counted. How a student organizes a collection shows or tells if they organized by color, size, shape, or if they organized by grouping into rows or piles. Also, it can show if there was no organization of objects.

My students will love counting and organizing into categories all the different varieties of math manipulatives!

These will attract and engage their attention! How fun to count, sort, and line up in rows the little cars, fish, and dinosaurs instead of always counting boring beans!
