My Students

I teach in a full day kindergarten class.

My students are cute, eager readers, and motivated to learn. My students are a group of 5-6 year old. They come from a low income community. More than 95% of my students receive free or reduce breakfast and lunch. My students are made up of mostly English language learners. My students enjoy hands-on experiences. I have 23 students in my class. I enjoy working with my students everyday.

My Project

I would like to teach my kindergartners more about financial literacy by understanding wants vs needs through dramatic play.

I want my students to recognize that all people have wants and needs.

For my students, their family will provide whatever they want or need for them. However, I want my students to understand that not all students have their needs met and certainly not their wants because some families do not have money for it.

I plan explain the difference between needs and wants, as well as price and value of things. By examining the concept of "needs vs. wants," students learn that the things that make us happy are not necessarily things that cost money.

Afterwards, as a whole class will create and write real life scenarios and stories. Using the tabletop puppet theater and puppets, students will get a chance to act out the stories with other classmates. Role playing real life scenarios of wants vs needs will allow my kindergartners to become immerse and truly have a deeper understanding of financial literacy.
