Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school district where students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our student population receiving free lunch. As teachers, we are encouraged to incorporate technology into the classroom, as well as create a comfortable learning environment. Working in a low income school district, it is hard to come across the necessary materials required to enhance student learning and my own teaching style.
My students are innovative, visual learners who have a passion for working with technology.
Many of them do not have the opportunity to use technology outside of school because it is not available to them at home. Fortunately enough, we have some technology in our classroom, but it is still difficult to engage my students. Working in special education has given me insight on how beneficial technology can be to education and it allows my students to see their learning successes.
Each day, students walk into my classroom full of energy, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. With that being said, they deserve an environment that keeps them engaged and comfortable.
My Project
Many of my students have a high rate of absenteeism. When they miss school, it creates gaps in their learning. There are programs in place at my school to encourage students to attend, but I want to do more for my students. I feel that having technology in the classroom will make the curriculum come alive and will be an exciting way to engage them in learning. This will encourage my students to attend school on a regular basis, and will ultimately help reduce absenteeism.
If a picture says a thousand words, imagine how many words a video or an interactive application say.
As a special education teacher, my students benefit from a multi-sensory approach to learning. Most of my students, if not all, tend to understand material when it is presented visually rather than verbally. Technology in the classroom will not only benefit students' visual learning, but it will keep them engaged through hands-on activities.
Having an iPad in my classroom will allow students to interact with the lesson content. This will engage students in the learning process and help encourage them to attend school. With the techtub, students will have a place to store their technology and keep it charged without taking up a lot of space in the classroom. With the iPad, it is essential to have headphones because this will allow my students to listen to passages being read to them, which is beneficial for those who have weaknesses in reading. They can utilize programs like Snap and Read. If learning is fun, the kids will want to come! Use of this technology will help my students work towards their individual goals and objectives. Ultimately, this new technology will encourage my students to come to school and take an active role.
