My Students
Our school serves all the high school students in our area, as well as those who choose to come from outside the district because of our high standards for learning. As a charter school, we do a lot of things right in terms of rigorous and challenging teaching standards, but we teach students that come from limited backgrounds, many of whom turn to the school for all of their resources. We are a diverse school, but students are often uninformed about cultures around the world and how those cultures are impacting our the world we share. They are motivated to research and debate social issues such as refugees and immigration, and we need engaging materials to keep them interested.
My Project
My class already loves to read Kite Runner. When we begin our study of the book, many of the students tell me that they don't know much about religions or cultures other than their own. Most of their knowledge about Muslim culture comes from the mainstream news rather than personal experience, and they don't know what its like to live in a country torn apart by war, where mass amounts of people flee as refugees.
Kite Runner gives them that experience and understanding, but our book supply is getting low, partly because this book is so well-loved by my students.
Many are tattered and torn because the students are reading it with such passion. We need more books so that we don't have to share, allowing each student to read it at their own pace. We also need Hosseini's next book, A Thousand Splendid Sons, for advanced readers to read after they've finished Kite Runner.
Reading texts like these moves students toward being more knowledgeable and more empathetic toward other cultures that might be very different from their own. I strongly believe, and I've witnessed, how reading books like these, and taking part in all the corresponding class activities, teaches them tolerance for humanity.
