Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from across the globe and face enormous challenges. We are a high poverty school and my students come from many backgrounds. Many are English learners and speak Spanish, Korean, Bengali, Tagalog, Russian, and more as their first language.

My students are a bright, motivated and incredibly diverse group of middle school students.

I am inspired by their hard work and dedication to learning. In the face of challenges, they are very resilient.

As a language arts teacher, I want to bring my love of literature, writing and character development to my students as they navigate growing up in Los Angeles.

My Project

My students are visual learners and they engage with technology in their daily lives--videos, apps, and games. Having lessons that engage them using technology will help them learn! A MacBook Pro will help my students see and create presentations that will bring the material to life.

A Mac would help us create media rich presentations and share them with the class.

Students will interact and engage with the technology, viewing presentations and being creative with their own presentations.

In order to bring the curriculum and my lessons to life, I started creating visually stimulating Keynote presentations over the summer with a colleague who is using her MacBook.

My students will identify with the memoirs we will read difficulties of the author learning English. We will also read the true account of a girl who escaped Afghanistan. Here, it would be great for students to use the MacBook to present a group project on the lives of children refugees. Students will learn empathy and tolerance through these powerful stories.

We will research people who have fought for human rights--Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, Mother Jones, Harriet Tubman and Nelson Mandela. Students will do a group project on a person who has fought for human rights.

We will also look into an additional lesser known person: Mona Golabek. Golabek wrote a book called The Children of Willesden Lane that chronicles her mother's experience with the Kinder-transport. This important lesson will be better taught through videos, historical documents, and more. The MacBook will bring historical lessons to life.

This unit will give my students an understanding of the importance of tolerance. Literature is the means to teach students tolerance. This technology will help us greatly!
