This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the Media Specialist at an amazing K-8 center in South Florida. The school has approximately 300 children in second, third and fourth grade. 84% of our kids come from households with below average income. We are classified as a Title I school, since many of our children qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

The majority of our students are first-generation Americans.

Their parents are immigrants from the Caribbean and South America who work in low-paying jobs in the tourist trade. Over 80% of our kids speak Spanish in the house. Many of our children do not have access to English-language reading materials at home.

My Project

I am asking for class sets of three different books by Janell Canon. This project satisfies two of our kids' needs. First, our school places great emphasis on character education. Janell Canon's books are perfect for teaching tolerance. They teach kids to express their individuality and to celebrate their differences from each other. The stories are entertaining, beautifully illustrated, and never didactic. Each or all of these titles would make a great basis for a class project. Second, the younger children are sorely in need of fun book sets that they can study in class with their teachers. These 3 book sets will enchant our youngsters and provide Language Arts teachers with lots of talking points.

These books are highly recommended for second-fourth grade students and I'd like classroom sets of each title, to be housed and made available to students, parents and teachers in the school library.
