My students need access to books that not only represent them, their cultures and experiences, but also expose them to the diversity that exists in the world so that they may build empathy and tolerance.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Killeen's classroom raised $703

My Students
The children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves- my students value hard work and the opportunities they have, but face many social, emotional, and economic challenges. Over half of them are English Learners and 90 percent come from low income families. Many have come to the United States fleeing intolerance or other hardships at home, and are now learning to live in a very diverse community.
My students are developing into reflective learners who seek out opportunities for action.
At our school, we have a focus on communication through writing and presentation literacy. They are learning to tell their own stories. And with such a wide range of experiences to share and to learn from, they have a lot of stories to tell.
My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math, and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills, and to share what they've learned. They are great at making do with limited resources, but have so much potential to achieve more, given the opportunity.
My Project
Very few people have the opportunity to travel the whole world and meet all types of people. And nobody has the opportunity to experience every possible situation. Books are a wonderful tool for teaching tolerance, as they provide exposure to diversity that is otherwise difficult to attain.
Books featuring diverse characters and experiences will help my students expand their awareness of and tolerance for other cultures.
Together we will read and discuss one book each morning at our morning meeting. Through stories, they will be exposed to situations they otherwise might not find themselves in, and characters they otherwise might never meet. They will be able to consider how they would feel and what actions they would take in another's shoes.
My students are minorities, and as such, often do not see themselves represented in mainstream media. Having access to a diverse set of classroom books will help everyone feel included in our classroom and engaged in our coursework. These stories will simultaneously help them build confidence in themselves and empathy for others.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
