Teaching Tolerance Through Quality Literature

Help me give my students enriching, diverse books that teach students to be open-minded and tolerant of other people and their cultures, beliefs, and traditions.

My Students

We are an International Baccalaureate elementary school with the mission of cultivating in each student the desire to grow in wisdom, nurturing an open and curious mind and serving others with a generous spirit. We have a truly international culture and diverse student population.

Our goal is to create an advanced elementary program where our students become critical and compassionate thinkers.

Students become aware of the shared humanity that binds all people together and develop respect for the variety of cultures and attitudes that adds to life’s richness.

My Project

I am a literacy coach for my entire school, K-5. I have carefully chosen a selection of books that will help me teach all of my students how cultures, traditions, and views vary around the world, and even in our neighborhoods. Bullying often occurs because tolerance and open-mindedness is not explicitly taught to our students.

In a world where children do not know, or understand, much past their backyard, it is my job, as their teacher, to expand their knowledge and thinking to a global level.

With the use of these books I will be able to immerse my students into deep understanding and inquiry on a global and humane level.

Instead of just looking at water and how we use it in our community, "A Long Walk to Water" will show them that something so accessible to us, is sometimes far out of reach for others. "The Recess Queen" will teach my students that sometimes bullies are misunderstood and that one small act can be a catalyst for change. These are only a few examples, but the books speak for themselves!
