Teaching Tolerance Through Literature

My students need opportunities to learn about diversity and tolerance. Traveling out of their rural community is not an option. Literature is a great and inexpensive way to teach acceptance and tolerance.

My Students

My amazing students live in a rural area and more than half survive below the poverty line. My classroom is an inclusion class. This means that I teach students with disabilities along with their typically developing peers.

I learn as much from my students as they learn from me.

Despite the challenges my students face from learning difficulties to poverty, they continue to have good attitudes. They are kind and tolerant children; however, there isn't a plethora of diversity in the area. These children also miss out on opportunities to travel and see the world. I would like to introduce them to diverse cultures through literature.

My Project

My amazing students are kind and loving; however, they live in a community with limited diversity. Traveling to learn about other cultures and people is not an option because over half live below the poverty line.

I want my students to embrace the differences that we have and celebrate our uniqueness. I want my students to someday change the world with their tolerance and understanding.

This project will fill our classroom library with books about tolerance and diversity. It will help my students learn that our differences make us special. Please help me introduce my students to the world through literature. Please help me teach tolerance.
