My Students
We are a high poverty, low income school. We are a Pre-K to 5th grade school where the entire student body is able to receive free breakfast and lunch daily. We are in a military area, so many of our children have one or both parents in the military. Many parents are deployed for the school year.
We have many students with special needs or who need modifications to their learning styles in the regular education classes and learning tolerance is important for young children.
I am the "mother" in my classroom. Many students are in a single parent home, being raised by grandparents or sometimes older siblings. I know the importance to giving my students a "family" and knowing they are safe, loved and cared for - at least during the day at school! Accepting others for their differences is hard for adults, young children do it much better so I want to foster that and continue to build it up in my class.
My Project
We are now a global school and our focus in Second grade is Asia, so my students need current reading materials to compare and contrast our two cultures. We need atlas' and maps to show the land. We need books to read about the people and animals that live in Asia. We need books to show my students the art in Asia.
This will help my students to learn to appreciate others and understand that even though others might be different that we can live together in the world!
We also study The Underground Railroad and Black History during our "Freedom" unit in reading so more books about African Americans in our history is important! Students can read about Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver and Martin Luther King Jr. along with many others who shaped our history.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
