We need graphic design supplies to produce student-created shirts and decals to promote our school's Gay Straight Alliance and tolerance on campus (and the community)!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Burr's classroom raised $848
This project is fully funded
About My Students
Aloha! We are the Ilima Rainbow Royales, the oldest middle school level Gay Straight Alliance in Hawaii! We are a title 1 school, in which a large percent of our students receive free/reduced lunch. We have a diverse cultural population comprised of Filipino, Native Hawaiian, Japanese, Samoan, Micronesian, Caucasian, and African American students.
We learn so much from each other: culture, food, traditions, and TOLERANCE for what makes each of us unique! Our club represents the resilience of teenagers. We have worked hard to create a safe space for all, regardless of gender identity, ethnicity and views.
Our school's Gay Straight Alliance would like to design and print their own club shirts, and decals to pass out to our student body and faculty in our efforts to teach tolerance in our community. Our club is a safe place for all, regardless of gender identity, and cultural background. We embrace being proud of what makes us unique! We are the oldest middle school GSA in Hawaii, and have found that exposure is the first step in building tolerance. By showing pride in our club by wearing our original designs around campus and in our community we feel that we can peacefully promote our core values, while building up our students' esteem. This project also utilizes digital design skills taught in our faculty advisor's Media Class and we can apply it to career and college readiness.
In Their Own Words
We want people to know it's okay to be you! That you can look or feel a certain way and thats OK! When I started Middle School, it was weird how everyone seemed to hang out with their own groups, and then there were the outcasts who didn't sit with anyone at lunch. I know how that feels and want people to be able to find friends, even if they are different.
We are leaders in our community, and wearing shirts that we designed ourselves helps identify us as a safe person to students in need. We see our club members as ambassadors and our shirts shout "Hey, I'm here for you!" I don't want anyone to suffer in silence. Shine Bright!
Being a middle school students is hard! As the club advisor for our Gay Straight Alliance, I hope to create a safe space for all students who need support. Teaching students how to utilize graphic design skills to create their own shirts empowers them to speak up against narrow-minded views on campus, while boosting their confidence as a designer promoting their own diverse styles. Providing the supplies will eliminate our challenge of receiving school funding for a "controversial" club.
