Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a K-8, charter school in an urban area.

Our students are diverse and they all strive to be "civic-minded leaders, accomplished writers, and resilient lifelong learners." Becoming accomplished writers means that students must be exposed to a variety of quality literature.

Being civic-minded leaders means our students engage in activities and conversations that focus on identity, diversity, justice, and action using the anti-bias framework from Teaching Tolerance as a guide.

Our school is a K-8 charter school in an urban area. Our students are diverse and they all strive to be "civic-minded leaders, accomplished writers, and resilient lifelong learners." Becoming lifelong learners means that our students must be exposed to a variety of academic tasks as well as enrichment opportunities that involve the arts.

My Project

By reading books that showcase diversity and a variety of lived experiences, my students will learn how to be tolerant and accepting of others who are different than them. Using these types of books as read alouds for kindergarten students changes the way students feel about themselves as members in our classroom community as well as their views of others. My students will build their understanding of different cultures and ethnicities, various disabilities, diverse families, and gender fluidity. Books such as "From the Stars in tne Sky to the Fish in the Sea" will familiarize students with gender, identity, and acceptance of the differences between us.

These children's books will help build a safe and loving community for all learners.

It will also help build tolerance and acceptance of others while building a love of literacy and reading.
