Teaching Tolerance and Diversity with Picture, Story and Chapter books!

My Students

My scholars are a diverse group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Students living in these areas often have limited resources and experiences that are usually available to students their age living in the United States.

As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning through novel studies, project based learning, and cooperative group discussion on current global issues.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

Long before children enter my classroom they are taught many life lessons through reading books with their friends, family and teachers. For this project, I would like to complete a novel study of the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio. With a class set of the book, we will examine the different scenarios Auggie encounters and the effect he has on his family and friends. This is a wonderful book about a 5th grade boy entering mainstream school for the first time.

I simply LOVE this book and feel strongly that it’s message of tolerance, kindness, and friendship that truly connects to its readers in the best possible way.

When completed with this novel study, I hope to encourage students to read more about diversity and tolerance through the other story chapter books. Having these books available to students to read and discuss with their friends and family is so important. By donating to this project, you will be giving these students a chance to read these books – an opportunity that would otherwise not be possible.
