Teaching Tibet

My students need a class set of Heinrich Harrer's Seven Years in Tibet to experience reading non-fiction, international literature and complete a comparative study with the title's film adaptation.

My Students

My students are part of the Mississippi Gulf Coast community. They have experienced the chaos left by Hurricane Katrina and the harm done to the seafood and tourism industry brought on by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Though not a wealthy area, the coastal communities have a long legacy of hard work and endurance that has sustained them through many trials.

My International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme students are inheritors of that work ethic and commit themselves to success within one of only two IB programs in the state.

The IB diploma students spend their junior and senior year taking challenging college prep classes across the curriculum. Students are part of an international learning community that is committed to preparing students not only for college but also for lifelong community leadership.

English literature is a core class of the IB Diploma Programme. The course is arranged into four parts. Part 1 focuses on three works in translation (not written originally in English). Part 2 is a detailed study of three works from different genres. Part 3 focuses on four works of a specific genre. Part 4 is a section for teacher preference to create a well-rounded program of study.

My Project

Part 4 of the IB English program allows for teacher chosen literature and provides a few structured options for this section. The purpose of the titles chosen in Part 4 is to create a well-rounded syllabus of not only international titles but also works that are of cultural importance.

For Part 4 of IB English, my students will participate in a literature and film comparative study of three works and their respective film adaptations.

This requested non-fiction book, Seven Years in Tibet, details the author's experiences during and after WWII in Tibet and his friendship with the Dalai Lama. This title provides excellent practice with reading non-fiction, international literature.
