Imagine trying to communicate your wants and needs in a completely different country? No one understands you and you don't know what to do. This is how some of my students feel everyday. With an iPod touch, my students could use various apps to help communicate their wants and needs.
My students are kindergarten and first grade special needs students with varying developmental delays as well as Autism.
Some of my students have an extremely difficult time communicating their wants and needs. Other students love computers and educational games but cannot work independently because they do not understand how. Teaching through touch with the use of an iPod touch would allow them the ability to participate in computer class better and learn alongside their peers without the need for adult help. My students want to do things just like everyone else, but they need some additional tools to help them get there. An iPod touch, is one of those tools.
My Project
With an iPod touch, headphone splitter, and headphones, my students will be able to play educational games, learn social skills through sharing the iPod touch and playing together, and learn from educational sites such as starfall.com and a variety of apps that will be purchased. For example, many of my students have fine motor skill goals. An app and a device that allows them to physically write numbers and letters with their fingers will help translate to writing with a pencil. There are also e-Readers of popular children's books that can be loaded onto the iPod so that my students begin to learn how to read through touching words and hearing them read. The possibilities from learning with an iPod touch are virtually endless.
I also included an iPod case in the purchase because we all know that 5 and 6 year-olds are not the gentlest with materials. :]
By donating to this project, you will help my students learn in a way that is fun and encouraging.
This technology would make it possible for my students to learn in a way that is appropriate for them as well as hands-on. Through various apps, my students will learn reading, math, social, and communicative skills all while having fun and not being seen as different. They can work independently, which is a great desire for my students.
