Teaching that Hate Has No Home Here with Holocaust Resources

My students need Holocaust resources for enrichment of their educational experiences and to help to teach them why tolerance is an important part of building good character.

My Students

My students are 7th and 8th graders who take pride in their rural community. They support and encourage each other, whether it be in academics, athletics, or through personal triumphs or hardships. They welcome new students into our school with friendship and accept them as part of our family.

I love that my students are proud of their roots and show so much compassion towards one another.

They embrace their talents and use their learning to become better versions of themselves. I want to inspire them to continue on the path to becoming our leaders of tomorrow. Real-world teaching provides opportunities to inspire their curiousity. When given those opportunities, it is amazing and awe-inspiring to see the way their minds work as they engage and question.

My Project

In my middle school, we currently begin Holocaust Education in grade 8. After touring concentration camps in Poland with Yad Vashem, my colleague learned that the Diary of Anne Frank should not be the only Holocaust literature shared with middle school students. Because of this, I need more literature to round out their Holocaust education. It is important to teach my students that we should be tolerant of all people no matter their race, religion, gender, or other diversities.

I specifically chose books in the True Stories of Teens in the Holocaust: Primary Sources from the Holocaust because I feel my students can best learn from primary sources.

I also chose two books, one fiction and one nonfiction, to cover standards in both units, but also to add a variety of resources to widen their understanding.
